Masters Of The Universe Director Says Amazon Movie ‘Deserved Better Than It Got’

Despite largely positive reviews, Masters of the Universe It earned only $114 million at the worldwide box office. The film was considered a box office hit, but quickly became a streaming hit when it debuted on Prime Video.

Was being at #1 for five consecutive weeks enough to convince Amazon MGM Studios to move forward with a sequel? Considering the first installment cost $200 million, that’s a big ask, but it could happen.

When The Hollywood Reporter spoke to filmmaker Travis Knight, he was displeased Masters of the UniverseIts release worked…even if that streaming success could ultimately be what leads to a continuation of the story.

“Its life in streaming has been much more important to Amazon than its life in theaters.” The knight explained. “That’s not what I meant by it. I wanted their faith in us as filmmakers and in the film to be rewarded in a way that didn’t live up to my hopes and expectations. The film deserved a better fate than it got, but I accepted it.”

Whether the door is closed on its return is unclear, but the trade notes that Amazon insiders have responded by saying the company is considering “Theatrical and Streaming Value Added in Green-Lighting a Project.”

In a separate interview with ScreenRant, Knight was asked how likely he is to believe it Masters of the Universe 2 is. Reminding fans that the decision is not up to him, he emphasized that he is proud of the film he made for fans of the beloved franchise.

“It’s all out of our control. It was a joy to make this film; I had so much fun working with this team.” Knight excited. “We had a lot of fun, and I think that comes through in the experience of watching the movie.”

“At the end of the day, decisions like these are out of our control; you always imagine where these people’s lives go after the movie is over, and if the world, in its wisdom, asks us to do more of that, we’re happy to give it to them.”

“But ultimately it’s out of our control.” he continued “So every film you make, you put everything you have into it and you just hope that the film takes on a life of its own and finds a connection with the people you’re trying to reach.”

Masters of the Universe told the full story, but also ended in a way that set the stage for She-Ra to debut in a potential sequel.

Lauren Saliu, who played She-Ra in the film’s post-credits scene, previously told us: “I mean, I would absolutely be open (to a sequel). It would be an amazing opportunity to play a character like that. I’d be so grateful. And to be able to use my skills that I’ve worked so hard to develop would be amazing to be cast as well.”

“So yeah, if he calls, let’s talk. If he thinks there’s someone else he’s got in his sights that’s better suited for the role, then fine. But I believe whatever’s meant to be, it’s going to be him.”

In Masters of the UniverseDirector Travis Knight brings the legendary franchise back to the big screen in this epic live-action adventure. After 15 years apart, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicolas Galitzin) back to Eternia, where he finds his home destroyed under the evil rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto).
