With Leica’s phenomenal Wildwood in theaters now I have stop motion on my brain. And when you think of stop motion, you think of Phil Tippett. Not only has he won multiple Academy Awards for his work, but he is mostly known as the king of stop motion. Mad God was his passion project and the result of 30 years of work. It was his obsession, and the holy hell result is a fever dream beyond words. There are so many gruesome and disturbing visuals at every second that it’s almost overwhelming. This movie absolutely filled me with an uncomfortable dread that is hard to describe. Here is a synopsis from imdb.
The Assassin journeys through a nightmarish world of tortured souls, ruined cities and wretched monsters, born from the primal horrors of the unconscious mind of Phil Tippett, the world’s preeminent stop-motion animator.
Mad God is the absolute embodiment of a unique artistic vision. Obviously, the first thing you notice and pay attention to is the incredible stop motion models and animation artwork. But this film does not allow you to be satisfied and just admire the artistry. He keeps getting punched in the face. It builds macabre image upon macabre image upon macabre image. It’s almost ruthless. And every scene is as jaw-dropping as it is stomach-dropping. The different layers of hell and torture are true visions of horror. That’s why this movie is so disturbing. You see things you’ve never seen before. Even though it’s mostly stop-motion animation (with some live action thrown in as well), it’s so impactful that you’ll seriously find yourself on edge and restless throughout its duration. This is not a film where you follow a linear story; This is a film that you feel about how it affects you. He is unique, just like Phil Tippett himself.
