10/27/26 – October Horror Movie Pick #27 – Tone (2026) – Retro Blog: Thoughts of a Scary Horror Writer.

Undertone is a film that is understated and a deliberate slow burn. When it originally came out, it was misrepresented as the scariest kind of movie, and I think that gave people the wrong idea. But if you know beforehand that it’s a small, methodically paced, frog in boiling water, psychological film that moves rather slowly. This is not a film that relies on jump scares, but one that uses sound design as its main scary feature. And in my opinion, it manages to create a pleasant mood experience. Here is a synopsis from imdb.

Evie Babic, a skeptical paranormal podcaster who cares for her comatose mother, receives disturbing recordings related to a folkloric menace, and each new file brings her closer to fears she can no longer explain.

You just knew podcasting was going to make its own movies because it grew so quickly. And for me, it was a fun way. Listening to the clues along with the character is a fun way to get yourself a little screen oriented. If ever there was a movie to watch with headphones, this is it. As I said before, sometimes preconceived notions can mar the viewing experience, and I think the initial trailers made it look like this non-stop fear factory. So if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll probably find this movie slow and boring. But personally, I love the slow burn. I love the feeling when I feel the film slowly increase in temperature. And once you realize that the director shot this movie in the exact same house where he cared for his dying parents, you see that there are layers here and it makes for a much more personal experience. It’s a little film that deserves more eyes… and ears.
