With the release of the second album Swallow! On November 6th, Shygirl shares ten films that have influenced her work.
Be sure to read the liner notes for each film to see his explanation of their influence.
- Bourne’s identity
“Bourne The first time I was on a mood board was when I described the energy and approach to the visuals Swallow! I wanted something that felt like a high energy indie film approach – there was always something that felt real about Bourne – his memory loss gave the facade of being a normal person in unusual circumstances and he rose to the occasion. And I always liked the camera performance and color quality. I love the European feel of the film.”
- Layer cake
“Classic. There’s a comedic tone woven into the action here, a cynicism and irony that I identify with British films. The bad guys are both intimidating and comical in their stereotypical roles. I also love the drive in it – everyone is out to save themselves. I think I love this film. The narrative and journey of Daniel Craig’s character because he almost He has a metaphysical approach to his situation and the inevitability of everyone’s fate.”
- Run Lola let go
“This movie has such an iconic place in the image (that) I knew it long before I saw it. It was the trailer that first drew me in, and that’s very important to me. I love trailers and the ability to pick out key moments in a movie to get the feel of the movie.
- great beauty
“It’s as the title suggests, this film is stunning, a visual visual masterpiece, high contrast and high definition in its intensity. I love cinema that offers me time to simply escape into something beautiful. To live and appreciate something that I might not have time to be tired on a daily basis. Grand beauty Like a painting to me, and an example of what cinema can offer, it has a renaissance approach to its visual language that I love to look at and use for inspiration again and again.
- good time
“There’s so much tension in this film, I often find Saffi films because of that, but good time One of my all time favorites. The relationship between the brothers and the close relationship between both brothers is heartbreaking as we see how difficult and capricious life can be with a series of reactionary decisions. Life is survival for these characters, and survival is hard. I love how this movie makes us feel about Robert Pattinson’s character – he’s not one-dimensional, he’s got some potential.
- The fifth element
“The fifth element It’s a great movie, I love it stylistically – Galliano’s costume design, the hero’s Halloween costumes and cosplay over the years – the soundtrack drives the intensity of the action and cinematography. Even as we get lost in the fantasy of this dystopian space setting, the human story of love and sacrifice, as well as power and control cements this film in my mind as an all-time great. Drama dresses and sweats *chefs kiss*.”
- a bird
“a bird There is a film that I consider quite unprecedented in its approach. There is a well-worn sense of how the story unfolds slowly and how we get to know the characters in it. To me it feels real, the drama isn’t over the top and the nuances of the characters are subtle and understandable. Even though I’m not the same or in the same circumstances, I can imagine feeling like a passenger in my own life as the main character. a birdLooking for something that causes a sense of change, of being trapped and finding beauty in places where there aren’t many untrained eyes.”
- fish tank
“Similar a bird With my gratitude, I could not but mention my first experience of Andrea Arnold’s work. I love a coming-of-age story, especially one where a character has a complicated relationship with a father figure. I love finding stories that explore being a girl in this world and dealing with the inappropriate limitations of that experience.”
- The Prince of Broadway
“I first watched this movie when I wasn’t really in the mood to watch it, but I quickly fell in love with Sean Baker’s sensitivity and honesty in his storytelling. I haven’t stopped recommending this movie to people. I love the documentary feel, how we sit through more scenes than expected and watch the emotions and actions unfold. It reveals a somewhat ordinary person living an atypical experience.”
- closer
“closer is complicated. my question closer is that it portrays love as a tangled thing woven between many people. It is selfish and cruel, yet it is inclusive and accessible. Love unfolds as a series of actions that ultimately propel our characters forward and apart, each on their own solo journey as they use each other. I love this movie and its pacing, some of my favorite actors at a great point in their careers. I love this time capsule of the film, it’s nostalgic for the old London buses and classy tone. I feel my comfort film as tender moments Swallow! It would fit perfectly inside, where even in the face of destruction, when relationships change and fall apart, love is still a worthy pursuit.
