There’s a reason Jane Austen’s 1811 novel Sense and Sensibility has been adapted so many times for screen and stage. The story of the Dashwood sisters as they experience love and heartbreak after being forced to leave the family estate and move into a relative’s country house is as timeless in its coming-of-age story as it is timely and grounded in its themes and sharp social commentary.
There have been many films based on Jane Austen’s books, some maintaining a period setting and others taking a more contemporary approach. The best Jane Austen films are those that simply focus on relatable and complex heroines and their plight. For example, Georgia Oakley’s 2026 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esme Creed-Miles as Elinor and Marianne. /Film’s own Ben Pearson praised the film as a must-see even in a crowded cinema landscape, highlighting how “funny, charming, sweet and wracked with longing” the adaptation is, comparing it to Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Little Women.
After the film failed to make much of an impact in theaters, Focus Features is bringing “Sense and Sensibility” to digital platforms on November 3, 2026. Those who want to actually own the film and not just rent it from a platform that can take you to it at will will have to wait until December 15th, 2026 for Universal to release the film on Blu-Ray.
Feeling and sensitivity bring heart, sadness and romance to your home
It’s been over 30 years since Ang Lee’s phenomenal 1995 version of Sense and Sensibility, but now we have a new version that offers a similarly beautiful film. Georgia Oakley’s film focuses more on the relationship between the Dashwood sisters, particularly how they grow and learn from each other amid their romance.
The film also stars Caitriona Balfe, Frank Dylan, Herbert Noordum, George McKay and Fiona Shaw – who has a standout scene. Even if Sense and Sensibility doesn’t really take off at the box office and make a huge impact on awards season, it’s a tale worth experiencing, whether it’s for the first time or just for a new time.
